Weathering Steel, one of our available material choices, increases in durability with the passing of time. Under the influence of weather, this rusty-colored steel becomes more resistant to atmospheric corrosion, gaining strength that leads to long-lasting products constructed from this unique material. Learn how this is accomplished and how to implement this fantastic material into your landscape design space.
Weathering Steel Planters
The durability of planters and planter walls made of Weathering Steel material is derived from the natural red-orange oxidization that forms a protective, self-healing patina layer on its surface, continuously developing and regenerating. The patina slows corrosion and increases the structural integrity of planter products.
Weathering Steel's distinct color transition from vibrant orange to a deep reddish-brown offers a warm industrial aesthetic favored by many landscape architects. Our A588 and A606 grade steel planters are meticulously assembled and welded and have stainless steel bases to extend their lifespan.
Weathering Steel products ship with a natural mill scale finish. The initial oxidation develops within weeks of shipping and continues evolving over time. Environmental conditions such as humidity, salt, and the temperature at installation, can affect rust uniformity and formation rate. The color develops from a vibrant orange to a deep reddish-brown.
Pre-Weathered Steel Planters
For a faster weathering look, choose our Pre-Weathered Steel finish. Pre-Weathered Steel products start out as Weathering Steel products and then undergo an earth-friendly pre-treatment to help accelerate the natural weathering look of steel. It steps up the oxidation process timeline to help speed up the desired visual result.
Our multi-step process begins by grit-blasting the raw mill scale surface. Next, it is treated with an all-natural solution of hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and salt. Treated products are cured for a day before being individually wrapped in paper and then plastic before shipping.
Handling Weathering Steel
Raw mill scale steel and treated surfaces can be powdery and may show markings during delivery and installation. These changes are affected by humidity levels and storage.
Weathering Steel products should be unwrapped upon arrival and stored indoors if possible. Shedding during unpacking and storing may occur; protect flooring during storage and installation.
