Weathering Steel
Weathering Steel is A588 and A606 grade steel that exhibits increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared to other steels.
Shipped with a natural mill scale finish, the initial oxidation develops within weeks, and evolves from a vibrant orange to a deep reddish-brown that is influenced by environmental conditions.
Pre-Weathered Steel
Our Pre-Weathered Steel finish provides a natural weathering look at an accelerated rate. Pre-Weathered Steel products undergo an earth-friendly pre-treatment that speeds up the oxidation process for faster results.
Raw mill scale steel and treated surfaces can be powdery and may show markings during delivery and installation. Unwrap products upon arrival. Store indoors if possible. Shedding during unpacking and storing may occur; protect flooring during storage and installation.
All rust is water-soluble. Rust runoff from rain, dew, or other moisture will stain surfaces the planter touches, like paths or gutter/drain systems. Exterior sealants wear off over time, allowing the runoff to cause staining.
Speeding Up the Weathering Process
Clean oils off the metal surface before treatment; denatured alcohol works well.
If done outside, the sun can help heat and dry the surfaces.
Spray the surface with a saltwater solution every few hours for at least a few days. Allow the surface to dry completely before reapplication.
Use a spray bottle filled with ½ cup (4 oz) of salt per gallon of warm water.
Plain road salt works best; do not use iodized salt or anything with additives.
After a strong patina starts, switch to using only water. Do this for a few days at the same interval.
The longer the salt water is sprayed, the darker the patinas. The color and rate will depend on the environment. The best results take the longest time.
Long-Term Care
Over time, a protective patina layer forms to reduce rusting. Re-exposed surfaces may re-rust due to scratches or otherwise. The protective barrier forms when the surface becomes wet and dries thoroughly. Without drying cycles, corrosion may persist in high rainfall, humidity, or fog, causing early failure.
