KODA Seattle Modern Rooftop

Seattle, WA

KODA Condominiums is a modern luxury style high-rise perched at the gateway to Seattle's historic Chinatown-International District. The name KODA is Native American for “friend,” which makes sense as cultural diversity and a welcoming vibe are part of the building’s energy and appeal. Bookend between Puget Sound and Mt. Rainier, KMD Architects took full advantage of the 360-degree views by creating several stunning and organic amenity spaces and a beautiful rooftop deck for community gatherings.

Landscape Architects from Brumbaugh & Associates specified Tournesol’s products to elevate the rooftop design and awarded the project installation to JH Landscaping & Irrigation. “We’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with both firms on various projects in the Seattle area, so we were thrilled to partner with them again on this landmark project,” said Tournesol’s representative Catherine LeDuke.

The rooftop includes a well-orchestrated arrangement with various sizes of rectangular and square Wilshire Collection planters. More than 60 Wilshire planters were fabricated in Smooth FRP Fiberglass and Acid Etch GFRC Lightweight Concrete in our popular Shadow color. “The fiberglass replicates the modern look of powder-coated steel, but it is much lighter weight and is weather resistant.” On the 7th floor, a wellness center to initiate health and well-being displays floor-to-ceiling windows residents can look out and enjoy our Wilshire planters lining the amenity deck.

Sleek, cast-in accessory light pockets in the walls of the Wilshire planters accommodated three different light fixtures installed by PCL Construction. Our Wilshire planters can be ordered with pockets to hold lighting, audio, electrical, or junction boxes. “We can also cast-in sliding or swinging doors, creating hidden spaces for irrigation controls or storage access,” said Catherine.

The building manages stormwater on-structure rather than on-grade. Tournesol's Bioretention Planters were also specified; Bioretention (also referred to as flow-through) planters act as an on-structure organic filter for stormwater systems. JH Landscaping & Irrigation matched planter drainage with on-site drain holes moving water below the deck versus draining above the deck.

Tournesol’s products blended seamlessly into the Zen-like organic spaces of this iconic building. Kudos to KODA and the firms that brought this gem together! We look forward to working with you in the future.
